The Board of Chosen Freeholders is
the legislative body offering advice and consent to the actions of the
County Executive and his administrative staff. The Board approves all
contracts signed by the Executive and sets policy. The Freeholder staff
consists of the Clerk and Counsel to the Board, Freeholders Aides, and
secretarial and clerical staff.
Hudson County has nine freeholders,
each of whom is elected within a district. The districts are equally
proportioned on the basis of population. The Board members select one of
their nine to serve as Chair and one as Vice Chair for a period of one
year. The Freeholder's term of office is three years, with each of the
current Freeholders' terms expiring December 31, 2002.
