McCann
is Eligible to Run for Mayor of Jersey City
Yes, former Jersey City
Mayor Gerald McCann can run for office this year, but that's not likely to be
the final word. Both sides have already indicated they'll appeal Superior Court
Assignment Judge Arthur D'Italia's precedent-setting decision if they lose.
McCann said the only issue should be "to let the people decide who will
represent them."
The
case was brought by McCann after City Clerk Robert Byrne refused to certify his
nominating petitions to run for Jersey City. Byrne said enough valid petitions
were submitted, but he didn't certify McCann as a candidate because of
surrounding legal issues. Corporation Counsel Sean Connelly had advised Byrne
that McCann was ineligible to hold office.
